Vision Insurance: Is It Right for You?

Find out if vision insurance fits your needs.

Vision Insurance

Many people misunderstand how vision insurance works. The type of doctor you need—whether for a routine eye exam or an eye injury—depends on the reason for your visit.

At its core, vision insurance helps reduce costs for routine eye exams, eyeglasses, and contact lenses. Some plans also offer coverage for corrective procedures like LASIK. Most policies include one pair of glasses or contacts per year.

Which Policy Covers Eye Injuries or Diseases?

Routine vision exams typically diagnose conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. During these exams, an optometrist or ophthalmologist may also detect signs of other health issues, such as diabetes.

  • Routine vision exams are covered by vision insurance.
  • Medical eye exams (e.g., for conjunctivitis or eye infections) are typically covered by health insurance.
  • Eye diseases and injuries are usually covered under your health insurance plan rather than vision insurance.

If an issue is detected during a routine vision exam, a follow-up visit may be covered under your health insurance.

What Does Vision Insurance Cover?

Vision insurance typically helps cover:

✔ Yearly eye exams
✔ Eyeglass lenses
✔ Eyeglass frames
✔ Contact lenses
✔ Discounts on LASIK and PRK vision correction procedures

Some plans may have limits on how often they cover new lenses or frames—usually every year or every two years.

Understanding Dental Insurance Coverage

Dental plans typically fall into two categories: indemnity plans and managed-care plans. The key differences include:

  • Indemnity Plans – Offer a broader provider network but may require upfront payment before reimbursement.
  • Managed-Care Plans – Feature a network of dentists with pre-negotiated rates and direct billing to the insurance provider.

Who Provides Vision Care Services?

Most vision plans work with a network of eye care providers, which often includes:

  • Optometrists – Conduct routine eye exams, prescribe glasses and contact lenses.
  • General Ophthalmologists – Diagnose and treat a range of eye conditions.
  • Refractive Surgeons – Perform corrective procedures such as LASIK.

Many vision insurance plans operate as PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations), allowing you to choose from a network of providers. Some also let you see out-of-network providers, though you may pay a higher share of the cost.

Do You Need Vision Insurance?

If you or your family members wear glasses or contacts and require regular eye exams, vision insurance may be a worthwhile investment. However, if you don’t currently need vision correction, you may be able to receive periodic eye exams through your regular health insurance.
